Flashes Fly by Racers
in Season Opener!
Kent State stormed out of the gates and raced past Murray State, 41-10, in the 2010 season lid lifter Thursday night (Sept. 2) at Dix Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback Spencer Keith (Little Rock, Ark.) threw for a career-high three scores and senior running back Eugene Jarvis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) rushed for another as the Golden Flashes (1-0) won their second season opener in as many years.
Keith finished the contest 24-for-35 for 275 yards. Jarvis led the way in rushing with 45 yards on 11 carries. Junior wide receiver Sam Kirkland (Chesapeake, Va.) enjoyed a career day with nine receptions for 126 yards and a touchdown, and junior running back Jacquise Terry (Phenix City, Ala.) caught two more scores.
Senior safety Brian Lainhart (Cincinnati, Ohio) totaled nine tackles to lead the way on defense as KSU held the Racers to a school record minus-65 rushing yards. Senior linebackers Cobrani Mixon (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Dorian Wood (Austell, Ga.) followed with eight stops apiece and defensive lineman Quinton Rainey (Virginia Beach, Va.) recovered a fumble. Kent State outgained Murray State 412-193.
After the KSU defense forced the Racers to go three-and-out on the game's first possession, Jarvis got his first taste of game action in nearly a year after recovering from a kidney laceration he suffered last year. He carried the ball on four straight plays – the last of which went for a six-yard touchdown to give Kent State the early advantage.
The Kent State defense stymied the Murray State offense again on the next series. Jarvis put the Flashes in prime field position with a 22-yard punt return, and KSU capitalized with a successful field goal try by sophomore kicker Freddy Cortez (Fort Meade, Fla.)
MSU responded with an eight-play drive that ended in a touchdown, but Keith and the Flashes answered right back. The signal caller orchestrated a three-minute drive that culminated in a 16-yard scoring strike to Kirkland after completing passes for 17 and 10 yards and scrambling for 17 to set up the TD.
The Racers pulled to within three on a field goal less than four minutes into the second quarter. Terry then hauled in a Keith pass, broke through a pair of tacklers and scampered 49 yards for a touchdown with just over a minute to play in the half.
Senior wide receiver Anthony Bowman (Detroit, Mich.) electrified the crowd of 16,535 by taking the opening kick of the second half 92 yards to the house to swell the KSU advantage to 21 points. Cortez nailed a 37-yard field to make it 34-10 with six minutes to play in the third. Terry sealed the deal for the Flashes with eight minutes to play by catching a six-yard scoring pass from Keith.
Kent State begins a month-long road trip Saturday (Sept. 11) when it travels to Boston College.
